Samaria Gorge
in Crete (Greece / Europe)

Samaria Gorge is the longest gorge in Europe and is located in the Lefká Óri (White Mountains) it the western part of Crete. The gorge is 16 km long and the northern entrance is about 1250 meters above the sea level near Omalos city. From this entrance you can walk 13 km throught the National Park of Samaria and then it takes another 3 km walk to the harbour city of Agia Roumeli.

The best known and probably the most interesting part of Samaria Gorge is the "Iron Gate" that marks the narrow passage near the lower end of the gorge.

Approximately in the middle of the gorge there is an abandoned village Samaria that currently serves as the largest resting area for visitors.

And if you are lucky you can possibly see wild Cretan goats called kri-kri.
