Krak des Chevaliers
in Syria (Asia)

Krak des Chevaliers (Fortress of Knights in French) is one of the best preserved medieval castles in the world. The castle was built in the 11th century and at the end of this century it was captured by Crusaders during the First Crusade.

During the later Crusades it served as headquarters for knights of the Order of Hospitallers (organization responsible for defense of the Holy Land).

Krak des Chevaliers was never taken by storm. Only Sultan Baibars seized the castle by trickery using fake letter from Crusader commander ordering the castle guards to surrender.
