Bayon
in Cambodia (Asia)

Bayon is a Buddhist temple built at the end of 12th century by Jayavarman VII as a part of the new capital city of Khmer Empire called Angkor Thom. The temple is located in the very centre of the city.

Unlike the other Khmer temples towers of Bayon are richly decorated with massive stone faces. According to rumors the faces belong to the Khmer king Jayavarman VII who built the temple.

Bayon temple is surrounded by walls with bas-relief carvings. The outer gallery depicts historical events and everyday life of that time. The inner gallery was carved later during the reign of Jayavarman VIII and in contrast to the outer one it depicts scenes of Hindu mythology with carvings of Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma and many other symbols of Hindu religion.
