Batu Caves is a complex of a number of caves and cave temples. Located about 13km from Kuala Lumpur it is a must see for all visitors of Malaysia. Visitors are welcomed by the tallest statue of Lord Murugan (the youngest son of Shiva and Parvati) in the world. It was build at the entrance to Batu Caves in 2006 and it is almost 43 meters (140ft) tall.
The cave complex consists of three main caves and many smaller ones. The largest cave is the Temple Cave and it's ceiling is 100m above ground. The whole cave is illuminated by sunlight through many holes in the ceiling. To get to this cave visitors have to climb 272 stairs but then they can admire many Hindu shrines hidden in the cave.
At the footsteps of the staircase leading to the Temple Cave there is a small cave called Art Gallery Cave featuring various Hindu statues and paintings.
Batu Caves is a pilgrimage site for many Hindus as well. Every year there is a three-day festival being held during Thaipusam (January - February). The celebration bring usually more than a million of pilgrims.
